Surcharging enables your shop to add up to a 3% surcharge to credit card payments made in your shop using Shopmonkey Payments. Turning surcharging on in your shop allows you to recover some of the costs associated with credit card transactions. Surcharging is exclusive to credit card payments and excludes debit card, ACH, cash, or check payments. The surcharge is calculated on the pre-tax amount and does not apply to taxes.
Please Note: Surcharging is not permitted in certain states including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma, and Puerto Rico. Colorado allows surcharging, but they do not allow the surcharge to exceed 2%. Additional requirements for surcharging may exist in other states. You are responsible for ensuring that you meet your shop’s state requirements.
Enable Surcharing in Your Shop
To enable surcharging, your shop must have Shopmonkey Payments enabled.
Please Note: After toggling on surcharging in your shop, there will be a 30-day waiting period until surcharging is activated. This is a requirement by credit card networks. You will see a pending status in Shopmonkey until surcharging is fully activated.
Surcharging can be toggled on and off in your general settings.
Select the Settings icon in the bottom left corner of your screen.
Select General Settings under the Settings section on the left-hand side.
Select the Surcharging dropdown in the Fees & Taxes section of the General Settings. Toggle on surcharging to add a 2%-3% fee to all estimates and invoices paid with a credit card.
You will see a pending status until the required 30-day notice to credit card networks is fulfilled.
Surcharge Fee Printout
It is your responsibility to notify customers about your shop’s credit card fees. From within the Surcharging Fees settings section, select Download Window Printout.
Print out this page, cut out the disclosure, then place it in a visible area at your business's point of entry to notify customers about your shop’s credit card processing fees. Select Print.
Processing Payments with Surcharging Enabled
It is your responsibility to notify customers about your shop’s credit card fees.
Online Payments
Customers who pay their invoices online see options to pay via debit card or credit card. When surcharging is enabled, the credit card option includes the surcharge fee.
In-Person Payments
When charging a card payment in person, you will see options to select debit or credit. Similar to what the customer sees on an online payment, you will see the total for both the debit card (no processing fee) and the credit card (processing fee added).
