Using a barcode scanner to add or search for parts in your shop can help save you time and avoid typos when adding parts to inventory.
Barcode Scanner Set-Up
You can use any compatible USB plug-in or Bluetooth-enabled barcode scanner.
Many barcode scanners have a default setting that automatically adds an action after every scan (this is most often a “carriage return” that adds an “ENTER” after every scan). We recommend changing this barcode scanner default setting, as it will not work well with certain features in Shopmonkey. After updating your scanner’s settings to fit your needs, you will have a seamless experience interacting with Shopmonkey.
Barcode scanners typically come with their own setup page where you can make changes to settings. Please check with your barcode scanner provider with any questions on updating these settings.
Using a Barcode Scanner in Your Shop
There are three main benefits of using a barcode scanner in your shop: adding a new part to your inventory, adding inventory parts to an order, and searching for parts.
Add New Parts & Tires to Inventory
On the Inventory page (Parts or Tires), select the + New Part button. Select the Part # (Part Number) or SKU text field. Be sure that you have selected the text field before you scan.
Scan the barcode of the part. This will help you save time and avoid typos when adding a part. The rest of the part information will need to be added manually before saving the inventory item.
This same process will work on the Tires page of the inventory.
Add Inventory Parts & Tires to an Order
From within an order, select the Part line item. Be sure that you have selected the text field before you scan.
When the scanned item is in your inventory, it will recognize the part number or SKU match, and the associated part(s) will show in a dropdown on the part line item. Select that part from the dropdown to add it to the order.
Having trouble with the scan? Make sure that you update your scanner’s default settings. Check out the Barcode Scanner Set-Up section at the top of this article.
From here, you can change the quantity as needed to maintain an accurate inventory count.
Search for Parts & Tires on Orders
Search for parts using the barcode scanner on your Parts & Tires Workflow page or on your inventory page.
Parts & Tire Workflow Page
On the Workflow page, select Parts & Tires to view the Parts & Tires Workflow page.
Select the Search bar. Be sure that you have selected the text field before you scan.
Scan the barcode of the part. If the part has been used on an order(s), it will find the part you’re looking for. This will work for both part number and SKU.
Inventory Page
On the Inventory page (Parts or Tires), select the Search bar. Be sure that you have selected the text field before you scan.
Scan the barcode of the part. If the part has been added to your inventory, it will find the part you’re looking for. This will work for both part number and SKU.
